now playing: Stoned Love from the album “#1 Love Songs Of The ’70s” by The Supremes
I never looked at the lyrics of this song before nor really understood them. But this song is talking about God - or whatever you call stoned love - being the answer. Check it out:
Now, I wanna tell ya of a great love
Ohhhhhhhh, it will light up,
It will surely light up
Darkened worlds
If you’ll just believe…
<this is so gospelly sounding up to here>
Stoned love

(Stoned love) Mm-hmm mm-hmm
Stoned love, oh yeah
<now it’s groovin’>
A love for each other will bring fighting to an end
Forgiving one another time after time, doubt creeps in
But like the sun, lights up the sky with a message from above
Oh yeah, I find no other greater symbol of love

Yeah, don’tcha hear the wind blowing?
Mm-hmm, stoned love, oh yeah
I tell ya I ain’t got no other
(Woo!) Mm-hmm, stoned love, oh yeah yeah

Life is so short, put the present time at hand
Oh yeah, and if you’re young at heart, rise up and take your stand
And to the man on whose shoulder the world must depend
I pray for peace and love, Amen
Oooooh
<Sounds like a prayer to God - or your uncle or dad ;-) >
Can’tcha feel it?
Mm-hmm, stoned love
I tell ya I ain’t got no other
Mm-hmm, stoned love, oh yeah

(Oooooooh)
Oooooooh

If a war ‘tween our nations passed
Oh yeah
Will the love ‘tween our brothers and sisters last
On and on and on and on and…?
<such a 60s-70s lyric - give peace a chance, etc. Don’t get me wrong. I value peace and the end of war ‘tween our nations.>
Mm-hmm, stoned love, yeah
I tell ya I ain’t got no other
Mm-hmm, stoned love
Can’tcha, can’tcha, can’tcha, can’tcha, can’tcha feel it?

(Woo! Woo!) Mm-hmm, stoned love, oh yeah
Stoned, stoned, stoned, stoned
(Woo! Woo!) Mm-hmm, stoned love
Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
<But I gotta say, interesting choice of words - STONED love - I mean pot was ubiquitous in 1970>
Woo! Oh! Uh-huh, stoned love
Oh yeah yeah, uh-huh
(Woo! Woo!) Mm-hmm, stoned love
(fade out)
Wow! I got a new understanding of this song now. Thanks to iTunes random playlist generator and Songfacts Lyrics.

#42 watching a movie between posts

cuz I really can’t think about what I’m writing. I’m tired. who isn’t? I fire up iTunes but I just am not getting inspired by any music. So, I think I’ll go back to the movie.

#41 approaching dawn - still 3 hours away

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

now playing: Peer Gynt Suite, Op. 46 - “Morning from the album “Best of the Millenium - Top 40 Classical Hits [Disc 1]” by Berlin Philharmonic
This might be a little too early. It’s still very dark outside at 2am on the West Coast (US) I’ll have to play this again when dawn actually comes - hmmm, that’s not till 6:17 am. I am finishing at 6am. But dawn actually begins about an hour earlier.
The flutes and clarinets in this piece do conjure up a breaking dawn. Perhaps because our psyches have heard it so often in that context. I’m sure I’ve heard this work played with Bugs Bunny cartoons.
Well, that was a nice prelude to what’s coming!

#40 some crazy licks

playing: He Beeped When He Should Have Bopped from the album “Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Miss Thing!” by Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers
1999 recording, jazz standard. Lavay Smith, fluid saxophone solo. My friend, Sean K. would like this. Chris, there is a sweet trumpet solo here too. worth transcribing.

now playing: No Hey Problemo from the album “Sympathique” by Pink Martini
I met band leader Thomas Lauderdale in Boston, after I had moved from New England to Portland, Oregon, where he is from. My partner and I were getting some gay time away from the FOO (family of origin). Thomas was on tour and gigging in this gay club. We recognized him from Portland fame and introduced ourselves. Upon our return to Portland, we kept in touch. Portland is a small town, after all.
Make sure to visit the Pink Martini site and click on the ‘Pink Martini Radio’ You can listen to samples from the long-awaited album, Hang On Little Tomato.
