A little piece of The Veil

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

The Veil of which I speak is The Veil Nebula located in Cygnus, the swan. Look up on most (clear) summer nights and you will spy The Swan flying overhead in a westerly direction. Some folks see this constellation as the Northern Cross. Her head/beak/nose star is Alberio - a double star of blue and gold. very pretty. Her tail is Deneb, one of the bright stars that form the summer triangle with Vega in Lyra and Altair in Aquila.

The Veil Nebula is located just West of one of the wings, between Epsilon and Zeta Cygni. It is quite a large nebula and when viewing it through a scope, one usually must pan the section of sky it is in to see it all. It is also referred to as the Cirrus Nebula.
I made this sketch at 10:40pm, 8/25/06, while at The Oregon Star Party in the Ochoco Mtns. of Eastern Oregon. Looking through a 13″ reflector with a 17mm eyepiece and the Ultrablock filter.

This is part of NGC 6960 with 52 Cygni on the left in the drawing below. I’ll post more drawings soon.
